I used to be an owner/driver and worked for Target, who were taken over by City Link, many of the owner/drivers left after only a few years as the monies paid were dwindling in comparison to the costs involved. Many Courier companies expect owner/drivers to change vehicle every 3 years irrespective of the condition of the vehicle and replacement vehicle also have to be put into the carriers colours at your own cost (not that cheap) and of course the rising cost of diesel is very restrictive now and that is without taking into account the cost of servicing and providing yourself with another vehicle while it is in the garage. I have heard that some of the companies (and I am sure it includes DPD) have started imposing fines on the drivers that do not meet timed deliveries or complete daily rounds. Drivers used to be able to arrange their own delivery routes, which using local knowledge meant you could miss known bottlenecks, or deliveries to places that only opened at certain times etc.

But most routes now are computer generated and must be followed in sequence and they do not take into account road conditions, road works, school times, shop & business opening times and the list goes on. It used to be a reasonable living about 5 to 10 years ago but if you were considering multi drop deliveries then you would probably be better going employed rather than as a self employed owner driver.
